Heaven, Hell, and Hades (as well as Sheol, Paradise, Abraham’s Bosom, Gehenna, the Lake of Fire)

This is not a work of scholarship. I am no Hebraist, no higher critic, no ancient historian, no archaeologist. I write for the unlearned about things in which I am unlearned myself. If an excuse is needed (and perhaps it is) for writing such a book, my excuse would be something like this. It often happens that two schoolboys can solve difficulties in their work for one another better than the master can. When you took the problem to a master, as we all remember, he was very likely to explain what you understood already, to add a great deal of information which you didn’t want, and say nothing at all about the thing that was puzzling you. I have watched this from both sides of the net; for when, as a teacher myself, I have tried to answer questions brought me by pupils, I have sometimes, after a minute, seen that expression settle down on their faces which assured me that they were suffering exactly the same frustration which I had suffered from my own teachers. The fellow-pupil can help more than the master because he knows less. The difficulty we want him to explain is one he has recently met. The expert met it so long ago that he has forgotten. He sees the whole subject, by now, in such a different light that he cannot conceive what is really troubling the pupil; he sees a dozen other difficulties which ought to be troubling him but aren’t.

In this book, then, I write as one amateur to another, talking about difficulties I have met, or lights I have gained, when reading the Psalms, with the hope that this might at any rate interest, and sometimes even help, other inexpert readers. I am “comparing notes,” not presuming to instruct…The thoughts it contains are those to which I found myself driven in reading the Psalms; sometimes by my enjoyment of them, sometimes by meeting with what at first I could not enjoy.

Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard.

Numbers 16:29-33
If these men die as all men die, or if they are visited by the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me. Acts 2:22-32

Revelation 1:12-18

Revelation 20:11-15

Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Paradise:

Luke 23:39-43
One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Abraham’s Bosom:

Gehenna

Matthew 5:22: “….whoever shall say, “You fool,” shall be guilty enough to go into the, ‘Gehenna.’”

Musings:

God reveals Truth progressively through the ages. The Jews had an imperfect understanding of the afterlife, and their knowledge of it gradually increased as God revealed more and more through the prophets. King David understood that there was an afterlife, that his son just departed for it, and that David would go to his son, but his son could not come back to him.

2 Samuel 12:15-23
And the Lord afflicted the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and he became sick. David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them. On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us. How then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.” But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David understood that the child was dead. And David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.” Then David arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. He then went to his own house. And when he asked, they set food before him, and he ate. Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.” He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”

At various times and places, the Jews expressed their uncertainty of what the afterlife was. They knew of Sheol, and sometimes despaired of it. Often, it was spoken of as a place for the wicked; on occasion, it was clear that the righteous went there too.

Sheol and Hades are the same place (hereafter referred to as Sheol). Sheol is the old testament form of the word, and Hades is the same word rendered in the new testament. Before Christ’s resurrection, Sheol was the abode of the dead. All who died went there. There were two parts to Sheol – one part containing the wicked, the other part containing the righteous, with a huge chasm separating them.

Luke 16:19-31

When Jesus was dying on the cross, Jesus told one of those being crucified with him that ‘today you will be with me in Paradise’.

Luke 23:39-43

So after he died, Christ’s spirit descended into Sheol, into Abraham’s bosom. The spirits of the two men crucified with him also descended into Sheol – one into the wicked part, one into Abraham’s bosom. Paradise and Abraham’s Bosom are the same place, referring to the righteous portion of Sheol.

What did Jesus do in Sheol?

All the righteous in Abraham’s bosom undoubtedly recognized Jesus as the messiah, the one they’d been waiting for to redeem them. Jesus had come to lead captivity captive and bring them to the Father – but first things first, some of the saints who had died through the ages still had business aboveground to do for the Lord.

Matthew 27:50-53
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

Jesus then preached to the spirits in prison.

1 Peter 3:18-20
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.

Who were these spirits in prison?

2 Peter 2:4-5
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell [Tartarus] and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;

Jude 5-7
Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

The spirits in prison are those who ‘did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling’. It’s interesting that immediately following that verse (see above) say “just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire”. Different translations render this different ways. One way of reading it is that Sodom and Gomorrah indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, and likewise so did the surrounding cities. Another way of reading it (that seemed apparent in several of the translations I checked) is having the likewise link to the previous clause – implying that the angels who left their proper dwelling and position of authority had also committed sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire. If that were the case, that would make this following passage a lot clearer.

Genesis 6:1-4
When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

This passage could be read multiple ways. Perhaps the sons of God were angels, as in the book of Job, and they took on human form and procreated with the daughters of men, resulting in mighty men of renown (giants).

An alternative reading would be that the sons of God were from the godly line of Seth, and the daughters of men from the ungodly line of Cain, the procreation of which somehow resulted in mighty men of renown.

Personally, I’d put my money on the sons of God here being angels. It doesn’t seem too ridiculous, as angels definitely seem to be able to take on human form – Hebrews warns us about showing hospitality to all for some we meet that look human might be angels, Abraham sees 3 angels appearing as men that were capable of eating, and Sodom’s people saw the two angels appearing as men and physically lusted after them.

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Genesis 18:1-5,8
And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth and said, “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. 4 Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” … Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate.

Genesis 19:1-5
The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth and said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant’s house and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the town square.” But he pressed them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.”

But… we digress! So Jesus preached to the spirits in prison (who were likely those who copulated with mankind and had giant babies). His preaching likely took the form of preaching condemnation to and victory over these spirits, and not repentance.

Then Jesus conquered Sheol. Jesus was not abandoned to Sheol, nor could it corrupt him. Sheol was an abode for the dead, and while the body of Jesus had died, Jesus himself was the author of life – Jesus is life – and as such, Sheol could not contain him.

Acts 2:27
Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.

So Jesus busted out of Sheol, and led the righteous with him. (The wicked were left in Sheol.) Jesus took the righteous, a host of former captives of the Paradise side of Sheol, on high to the Father!

Ephesians 4:8-10
Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.” (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)

The story doesn’t end there. Some time after Jesus had had enough of Sheol, he took up his body once more and rose from the grave. For about 40 days he appeared to many, strengthening the church, building it up, putting everything in place for his Bride to grow under the guidance of the Helper. At the end of those 40 days, he ascended into Heaven on a cloud, to sit at the right hand of the Father. His disciples were so stunned God had to send a couple angels to tap them on the shoulders and get them moving.

Acts 1:1-11
In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Jesus now is sitting at the right hand of the Father.

Revelation 1:12-18
Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

Jesus died, and is alive forever. He holds the keys to Death and Hades itself. This is the beautiful part – no longer do believers have to go to Sheol and wait for the redeemer. Now, for a believer to be absent in body is to be present with Him! That is to say, believers now go straight to heaven and His presence when they die! Oh joyous day!

2 Corinthians 5:1-10
For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

What part of heaven do believers go to? All we know for certain is that we are in His presence; However, from the verse below it seems like Jesus may have transferred Paradise itself to Heaven, in which case, that is where we go when we die.

2 Cor. 12:2-4
I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows— and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.

What about unbelievers?

Revelation 20:11-15
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

It is clear that, prior to Christ’s ascension, unbelievers were in the wicked part of Sheol. It is also clear that at the great white throne judgment, Sheol is thrown into the lake of fire, as is anyone whose name is not found written in the book of life. So the final resting place of unbelievers will be the lake of fire, and unbelievers before Christ’s resurrection were in Sheol. It seems that unbelievers will continue going to Sheol until this final judgment, at which point they will spend eternity in the lake of fire.

The lake of fire is what Jesus and others refer to as Gehenna (which also has ties to an actual physical location in the old testament associated with human sacrifices and all sorts of vile things).

The lake of fire is hell. When most people speak of hell, they are referring to the lake of fire, the eternal resting place of the damned. Those who submitted themselves to the Lord and said “Lord, your will be done” will live in his presence for the rest of eternity. Those who refuse to submit to the Lord, the Lord says to them “Your will be done” and sticks them into the lake of fire, a place of eternal separation from God, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

One final thing… remember the Apostle’s Creed?

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
and born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

See the line, “He descended into hell.”? Other translations render ‘hell’ in this line as ‘hades’ or ‘place of the dead’, which is more accurate and less confusing in our modern tongue. Jesus descended into Sheol, not the lake of fire.

What is Jesus up to today?

Acts 2:32-35
This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”’

He is sitting at the right hand of the Father, watching the gospel slowly conquer the world through the work of the Holy Spirit in the church, waiting until his enemies are made his footstool – and then He’s coming again.

Sharpening one’s sword before the battle

Are you saying, “But I can’t be expected to live a sanctified life in my present circumstances; I have no time for prayer or Bible study right now; besides, my opportunity for battle hasn’t come yet, but when it does, of course I will be ready”?
